本文首先回顾了教育社会学思想先驱的研究,然后探讨自帕森斯的功能主义以来教育社会学宏观分析的主要成果。从"能人治国"理论开始,教育社会学的研究着眼于分析教育对社会秩序与社会功能维持的作用;但批判社会学对这种理论假设提出了质疑,由布迪厄等人提出的"再生产"理论认为教育只是社会结构和不平等的再生产的工具。于是。对教育的功能的讨论成为不同观点交锋的焦点。但美国社会学家柯林斯的文凭理论则提出了另外一些视角,这些研究推动了一个多世纪教育社会学的发展,使之成为教育理论研究中最具影响力的学科。
