视觉叙事视域下我国英语教科书插图的功能建构与意义生成

插图是英语教科书不可或缺的视觉辅助工具,本研究依据视觉叙事理论,对新中国成立以来各版本英语教科书中共2223幅插图的元功能建构特征进行了梳理,结果发现:再现功能方面,插图人物表征以正面完整为主,隐喻功能多样化;事件表征以动静结合为主,动态表征逐渐增多。人际功能方面,插图以旁观视角为主,视觉互动手段多元化;绘制风格以“类化”为主,人物形象极简化。语篇功能方面,插图以装饰性为主,图文关系疏离;以叙事主角为主,权威、榜样人物凸显降低。教科书插图的语言学功能旨在实现其建构客观世界、形成共感审美、呈现学科知识三类意义。为实现上述意义,教科书编制应保证插图内容的准确性与普适性,平衡大众审美和教科书审美,审度插图的辅文价值。

Abstract:

Illustrations are indispensable visual aids in English textbooks. This study examines the meta-functional characteristics of 2,223 illustrations from various editions of China's English textbooks, employing Visual Narrative Theory as the analytical framework. The analysis reveals that in terms of representational function, the illustrations predominantly depict characters through positive and full-length portraits, enriched with a variety of metaphorical elements. Visual content of events encompasses both dynamic and static imagery, with a notable trend toward increased use of dynamic representations. For the interpersonal function, the illustrations tend to adopt a detached perspective, with diversified visual techniques. The minimalist styles for character portrayal is predominant, and the character images are becoming increasingly simplified. Regarding the textual function, the illustrations are primarily decorative with a loose connection to the text, and focus on narrative protagonist, with a reduced focus on the authoritative and exemplary figures. The linguistic functions of textbooks' illustrations are found to be threefold: constructing an objective world, fostering shared aesthetic sensibilities, and presenting subject knowledge. To achieve these functions, it is recommended that textbook compilation must ensure the accuracy and universality of the illustrations, balance popular and educational aesthetics, and evaluate the textual function of illustrations.
