英国工党作为一个社会民主党派,传统地在原则上一直追求社会民主政策,在教育政策上强调平等机会、公平和社会的共同繁荣。自1997年英国工党在大选中获胜执政以来的两届任期内,布莱尔领导下的新工党的教育政策从总体上来说,延续了撒切尔夫人领导的保守党政府的教育制度,继续了国家课程、进一步加强了中央政府对教育的领导、强调教育的经济功能、以及高等教育阶段引入收费制度等。这些政策被广泛地认为是右倾的,从而受到了来自于党内和党外的许多批评。英国工党在教育政策上的这些历史发展变化,对于我国作为一个社会主义国家在教育政策上的选择可能会有一些启示。
