Abstract:

The role of " geographical knowledge " in the national geography curriculum and the position of "geographical knowledge" in the school curriculum in UK has changed vastly over time.Since 1990 s, a series of curriculum reforms have led to the lack of knowledge in geography curriculum. Therefore, the recent education white paper puts forward the requirement that knowledge should return to the national curriculum. This article analyzes the opportunities and challenges brought from the "knowledge turn" of the new version national geography curriculum and discusses the role of core knowledge and powerful knowledge in implementing geography curriculum. This paper concludes by arguing that "geocapability" is a possible way to deal with these challenges from the perspective of educational purposes.
